The pavilion on a gravel courtyard

Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

Green Ladder Pavilion

The pavilion is built from bamboo ladders, an everyday tool made from a traditional material. The units were assembled before being shipped overseas for the exhibition.

Bamboo grows quickly, abundantly and cheaply, and a single cane can cost as little as a dollar. The design team sees it as a green alternative to steel.

The ladders are linked into a porous but sturdy grid, with planter pots slotted between the rungs. The pavilion sets up a direct encounter between visitors and plants, and a reminder of how scarce green space has become in dense cities.

It was first shown for three months in the garden of a state library, then moved to a contemporary art foundation for a longer exhibition.
